Learn to Ring Church Bells in a Week

♦ By Tina Edwards ♦ Posted in NewsComments Off on Learn to Ring Church Bells in a Week

Ringing weekIf you have seen church bell ringing on television it may have appeared fascinating and complicated. It’s a fun hobby that combines light physical activity with hand eye coordination and a little concentration. Bell ringing dates back to the seventeenth century and is a British tradition and part of our national identity. Being part of a band of eight ringers who achieve good, even striking is a fulfilling achievement.

The Stoke Poges bell ringers are offering the opportunity to learn to ring church bells in a week. A series of five daily coaching sessions will give beginners with no previous experience the confidence to successfully ring with the band on the following Sunday.

Between Monday 4 August and Friday 8 August, the Stoke Poges ringers will demonstrate how to ring, give lots of opportunity for individual practice and share helpful hints to develop skill and confidence, good technique and the ability to ring in time with others. Musical ability is not necessary, and you do not have to be a member of any church to join.

The secret of successful ringing is getting attuned to the feel of the bell and controlling its movement by keeping the rope under control. Like any skill, the more you practise and the shorter the time between practices, the quicker you will progress. Our first ‘learn to ring in a week’ programme equipped participants to quickly progress to a level where they could join more experienced ringers on slightly more complex methods.

If you would like to find out more before signing up for our learning week in August, why not come along to our practice on Wednesday 18 June at St Giles’ Church, between 7.45 pm and 9.00 pm. For further information contact Tower Captain, Dr Peter Mackie or the Secretary, Ralph Bagge via the church office

The Bigger Picture

We are part of the Church of England and of the Deanery of Burnham and Slough. We seek to play an active part in the wider church. We are also keen to encourage good co-operation across denominational boundaries as we seek to be part of God building his kingdom.
